1. Angel - You can say that she is quite noble. Like a candle, she is willing to sacrifice herself to bring light to others. Very responsible. She supports to continue.
2. Devil - She is very bold. Her motto, "Just follow your passion." Lazy to do things that she is not interested in. She doesn't want to continue.
Well, I do not mean to say that Angel is good while Devil is bad.
Angel may be bad, as she is not brave enough to reject other people and follow her own desires; whereas Devil is honest and remains true to herself.
However, sometimes Angel may be right. Living in the society, sometimes our little sacrifices can help a large group of people. The concept of utilitarian: "It is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong."
Below are their conversations:
Angel: I think I should continue to be the committee of ABC Society. As a senior now, I have the responsibility to pass down what I have learnt to the juniors. It would be too selfish if I just keep what I have learnt to myself.
Devil: But don't you feel bothered and frustrated at all? Meetings and other small details, such as problems of all 11 groups, university administration, outside NGOs asking for 联署文告, need to think of ways to raise funds, what to do if a group asks for funds for an activity, etc etc etc......
Angel: Of course will feel frustrated, but in our lives, we also have other small details that make us feel frustrated. We still have to face them even though we dislike them. Besides, if I always think positively and try not to stress too much on those details, I believe I can get over it. 船到桥头自然直嘛~~ I can learn a lot of things too if I continue to be committee.
Devil: Yeah, maybe you can learn a lot of things, but do you see that you are neglecting your studies? Now that your interest in accounting is declining, if this situation persists, one day you may start to hate accounting! I do agree that learning leadership, cooperation, and other skills to be street smart is important, but you also cannot neglect your studies!
Angel: Aiyah, some days when I was free, I did not even revise or do my homework! I was just wasting time watching movies or dramas, or reading story books. But when I am busy with Society's activities, my time will be used for more beneficial things.
Devil: Reading story books is one of your hobbies, and it's good. If you join the committee, you may have less time to read books that you like. Besides, you can really learn a lot and mature through reading books, not necessarily must take part in activities.
Angel: But through participating in activities, I have the chance to develop my interest in other areas, such as doing crafts. I can design things and this can help to develop my right brain (creativity part).
Devil: But being too active is not good for your health! Everyday late to sleep and has to wake up early for class, will feel tired and sleep during class... Assignments also dragged for so long already still haven't start. If during the first year, when you are not so active in activities, your time is very systematic, and all the assignments were progressing smoothly.
Angel: But you also cannot guarantee that if I do not join activities now, I will do my assignments on time. During first year, my time was more systematically-arranged, this is because that time, I was using my old laptop. It often hangs, so I have to finish important things first before seeking for entertainment. Now, this new laptop, I can do a lot of things at one time, of course my attention will be dispersed. But I myself also are to be blamed. I am lack of self-discipline.
Devil: How about your friends? You feel sad because 2 of them, whom you were used to hang around with, are now drifting apart from you. You don't have common topics to talk with them anymore... You feel that they are trying to get away from you. (Even though this may only be your own one-sided feeling.)
Angel: Yeah... But I have also made a lot of new friends through activities. Maybe these new friends are the ones who will accompany me for the rest of my journey... Maybe it is time for the 2 old friends to depart from the train of my life... Besides, there is one friend who still sticks with me even though she knows about my busy life in this Society. I have to really thank her and appreciate her. Maybe by going down this road, I can really get to know friends who are true to me, who will support me, who will not judge me through stereotyping. Those friends who left, maybe they are not destined to be...
Devil: Then, if you decide to continue to be committee, what post do you plan to take? President? Or just normal Exco? Remember that you have internship in the second semester of next year!
Angel: Yeah. I would most probably want to just be a normal Exco. However, if no one wants to be the President, how? Some seniors were trying to persuade me to be the President, saying that I have the ability. But I know myself the best. I certainly am not the material of a President. I have no long-term vision for the Society, and sometimes my stand is not firm enough, will be easily influence by others. Besides, I am not outspoken and bold enough, and I have no charisma as a leader which can lead all the members to follow me.
Devil: Being the committee is like 自讨苦吃。No one who is member appreciates what the central committee is doing. All they know is to critic.
Angel: Hmm... It's okay too. Let them critic. As long as you know that everyone will make mistakes. Actually, ABC Society is really a unique society. Although its members may critic a lot, but on the other hand, they are also very accepting. It is really a free space for everyone to make mistakes. I thinks it is the only Society which I know that is so different yet able to continue as a body. All the 11 groups, imagine how diverse this society is! People from different backgrounds and have different principles. Yet, this Society is so open. Everyone has the freedom to comment on anything and share their thoughts and passion.
I have seen a person whom everyone said that they hate her, but they still support her and help each other when planning an activity. I have seen a person who talks really soft (even when he shouts, his voice is still softer than our usual voice volume!) and slow, but he has his own thoughts that he is eager to share with everyone. ABC Society provides the platform for him! He even gets to be a speaker for many talks! I really do think that ABC Society is a great platform where it does not discriminate and it gives us - university students a platform where we can make mistakes as much as we want.
Besides, one senior said, maybe having its members hating the central committee, this is also one of the unique characteristics of this Society.
*Sigh* There will be no end to this debate...
