Just read an article from newspaper (The Sun, June 6, 2011) entitled, "True Worth of Wisdom" by Goh Hock Thye from Ipoh. Below are part of his article which I summarize out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the Oxford Dictionary,Clever = being quick in learning, understanding of things and showing off ability and skills
Smart = having a good or quick brain, showing ingenuity, being clever and intelligent but perhaps, dishonest
Wise = having experience and knowledge together with the power of applying them practically
Smart is skewed more towards the negative side, having the element of outsmarting others to benefit oneself.
Clever, on the other hand, does not has the elements of insincerity or deceit.
(Therefore, do not use the wrong word when complimenting someone. XD )
What about being wise?
Being wise is considered noble because it has elements of being righteous, knowledgeable and able to make good judgment. Basically, being wise is about the ability to differentiate right from wrong.
A wise person does not mean that he/she knows everything. In fact, he/she realizes that, and will humbly seek knowledge from others, which also includes openly accepting criticisms.
An example, many parents will buy one toy each for their children to avoid arguments. But, what do you think wise parents will do?
They will buy only one toy so that they can cultivate the virtue of sharing among their children and thus developing a harmonious family.
Question: Why do we need to be wise?
Answer: To live a happy and successful life.
BUT, never mistake knowledge for wisdom! One helps you to make a living, the other helps you to make a life.
One is not born wise but one can, with the right guidance and attitude, acquire it through a process of lifelong learning.
DeeJay hopes that everyone will acquire wisdom throughout their life and use it to make a life that you can lead proudly and happily! ^.^
